The fixed speed detection cameras on the M7

First M7 average speed detection cases in court

The first prosecutions of motorists detected speeding by the new average speed camera system on the M7 came before Nenagh District Court last Friday.

Eight cases were listed where speeding was detected and fines had not been paid. Two of these resulted in convictions and fines, of €160 and €200.

The average speed in the cases heard ranged from 129kmph to 149kmph in the 120kmph speed limit zone. One case was struck out after sworn evidence was heard that another party was driving the vehicle at the time of detection. Another was struck out after the court heard that the defendant was ill.

All of the heard cases dated from April 2022, the month that the new camera system between Nenagh and Birdhill went into operation.
