Social stories available for libraries

Cllr Peggy Ryan, Cathaoirleach of Thurles Municipal District, recently launched the first in a series of social stories in Roscrea Library. A social story provides a social learning tool for people of all ages with additional needs, learning difficulties and those on the Autism Spectrum. They are short descriptions of a particular situation, event or activity, which include specific information about what to expect in that situation and why.

Cllr Ryan said: “These social stories will be a welcome support to families, individuals and groups using the library and help improve their library experience. I welcome the creation of social stories for Roscrea and Templemore libraries and look forward to the roll out across the library service.”

The initiative expands on the current resources available, such as sensory places, sensory toys and quiet time, and plays a role in making County Tipperary an autism friendly place.

Autism Awareness Roscrea have welcomed the move. A spokesperson said: “We are delighted to see this new addition to Roscrea Library. It will be a beneficial aid to parents of children on the Autism Spectrum and encourages more engagement with the library service.”

The social stories will be available in branch or can be downloaded from the library website at www.tipperarylibraries.ie.
