Ryan double seals league success for Silvermines
Silvermines 2-6
Boherlahan-Dualla 0-7
The County Camogie Grounds was the venue for the Under 16 ‘A’ League final between Silvermines and Boherlahan-Dualla last Wednesday and with the rain falling heavily it did not take from the spectacle that lay ahead.
Silvermines got off the mark when a great ball from Ailbhe Tracey found Saoirse Ryan who pointed herside into the lead. Abbie Horgan replied with a good point on the run and two further points from frees by both teams had the sides level again. A great ball from captain Jane Ryan in the middle of the field found Saoirse Ryan and she put the ‘Mines back in front.
It’s always a close keenly contested game when these two sides meet and a further free minutes later from Abbie Horgan brought the teams level again. The Boherlahan-Dualla girls tried everything to break down the Silvermines defence but they stood firm.
As half time approached, Silvermines got a crucial goal courtesy of Saoirse Ryan. Some great saves from the Boherlahan goalkeeper Saoirse Maher kept the scoreline the same until Charlotte Ryan pounced on a clearance to send the ‘Mines four points ahead. The ever-reliable Abbie Horgan pointed from a placed ball to leave just a goal between the sides at half-time, 1-4 to 0-4.
The first half saw some brilliant hooking and blocking from both teams which was to continue into the second half with neither team willing to yield an inch. First scores in the second half were from two placed balls converted by both teams.
A great ball from Shauna Looby into the corner resulted in another point from play by Saoirse Ryan. This was cancelled out by a point from play by Abbie Horgan to leave the score at 1-6 to 0-6.
Both teams battled hard with the ‘Mines defence consistently holding strong led by centre back Kellie O’Dwyer ably assisted by Ava Corcoran and Ava McGrath. Not long after Olivia Looby’s introduction she split the Boherlahan defence open with a surging run releasing a super pass to Saoirse Ryan to get the decisive second goal.
A further point from a free for Boherlahan saw their scoring completed. However, some great defending from the Silvermines backs and midfield with the ever-cool presence of Anna Lee in goals ensured their goal mouth stayed intact and the Mines ran out five-point winners.
