Olympic youths impress at European Cross Country Championships
The Nenagh Olympic Athletic Club under 20 cross country team produced an impressive performance to finish fifth in the European Clubs Cross Country championships in Spain on Sunday.
Having been in bronze medal position for much of the race, the Nenagh team eventually finished a creditable fifth of the seventeen teams competing.
Cian Hodgins led the team home in thirteenth place with Luke Purcell two spots behind in fifteenth with Daniel Ellis seventeenth. Thomas Bergin was the teams non-scorer in 53rd position.
It was a great effort from a young group who will be eligible again for the 2024 Championships and are already targeting having another crack at it.
Also in Spain, Nenagh Olympic’s James Tanner finished runner-up in the 5k Open Cross Country race with Seán Hayes tenth and Jamie Moloney one place further back.
Also, on the international scene for the club last weekend, Jennifer O’Leary had a very strong race at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, USA, finishing ninth in the U18 mile. This was a fantastic experience for her and a wonderful achievement to be selected to compete in this high profile athletics event.
Also in Ghent in Belgium, Nenagh Olympic’s Ava Rochford competed at the IFAM meet and did well in the junior High Jump.
