Nenagh New Year's Day run in memory of Shaun

New Year's Day run/walk in aid of Sarcoma Ireland

The people of Nenagh and surrounds are invited to start 2023 on the right foot with an organised run/walk in support of a very good cause.

The second annual run/walk in memory of Shaun Hilmi will set out from Nenagh CBS at 11am on New Year's Day. It will involve a 5km route with an optional 10km for runners. There will be a bucket collection on the day, as well as a raffle with some great prizes to be won.

All proceeds will be donated to Sarcoma Ireland, a charity group set up to support people with sarcoma cancer, a very rare condition that tragically led to Shaun's death on January 2, 2021.

Shaun, of Beechwood, Nenagh, was a Fifth Year student at the CBS. He was a very popular member of the school community and remains remembered by those in general who knew him as a “gentleman”.

He was also an avid sportsman, excelling in athletics, tennis, soccer, hurling and Gaelic football. At one point he was training five times a week with an endurance running group in order to maintain his high level of his fitness.

On the first anniversary of his death, Shaun's family - mother Geraldine, father Lee, sister Laura and brother Craig - organised a CBS run/walk in his memory and to raise funds for North Tipperary Hospice. Geraldine said they were delighted with the turnout and the amount raised - almost €4,000.

This year Shaun's family want to raise money and awareness for Sarcoma Ireland, a new non-profit organisation set up by sarcoma patients for sarcoma patients across the island of Ireland. Shaun had been diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a cancer that affects less than three in a million people.

Geraldine took the opportunity to thank everyone in the community for their support over these last few difficult years. She hoped to see another strong turnout this New Year's Day and support for a very worthy cause.
