Roscrea bound: Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald

SF leader to visit Roscrea

Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald will be in Roscrea this Sunday where she will deliver an address at a remembrance ceremony at the former mother and baby home in the town.

Ms McDonald will gather with others at the Sean Ross Abbey site where unmarried mothers were sent to have their babies when a mother and baby home run by nuns operated on the site between 1930 and 1969.

The ceremony is being staged to pay respect to the women and children who resided in the home over the decades.

The event has been organised by the We Are Still Here Sean Ross Abbey Roscrea group, which have been working to uncover information lost over the years relating to the mothers and children that passed through the institution.

The group is also seeking to ensure areas of the site where burials have taken place are preserved. The home had the highest infant mortality rate of all similar homes in the country in the years it operated and the remains of many infants who died there are still unaccounted for.
