Assaults at music festival and Nenagh being investigated

Gardai have issued a witness appeal after a local man was left with serious injuries following an assault at the Electric Picnic festival.

The man in his 30s and from the Silvermines area was reportedly assaulted on the Friday night of the music and arts festival at Stradbally. The incident occurred some time between 10pm and midnight at the Today FM Sound Garden during a set by DJ Jamie Maguire.

The assault is alleged to have happened during the last song of this set. The injured party was taken to Tullamore Hospital and was later transferred to St James’s Hospital, Dublin, to be treated for non-life threatening but serious injuries. Gardaí in Portlaoise say their investigations are ongoing and are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with camera footage of this incident to make it available to them

An assault on a female in Pearse Street, Nenagh, is being investigated by local gardaí.

The assault, described by a spokesman as “a serious incident”, took place at around 8.40am on Friday last. Gardaí are harvesting CCTV footage in the area as part of their probe into the matter.

Separately, a motorist was arrested on suspicion of drug driving on the M7 near Nenagh on the same date. He was questioned by gardaí after they detected him travelling at “high speed”. A man has been charged following an incident of alleged criminal damage to a cell at Nenagh Garda Station on Tuesday of last week.
