Lough Derg Yacht Club hold Shannon-One Design Centenary Regatta

Lough Derg Yacht Club in Dromineer held a Shannon One Design Centenary Regatta earlier this month, to celebrate 100 years since the design of the boat by Morgan Giles, thus heralding the arrival of One Design sailing on Lough Derg in 1922.

A festival and a celebration of the boat and all who have sailed in Shannon One Designs over the last one hundred years, hosted by Lough Derg Yacht Club, and under the auspices of the Shannon One Design Association. The boat is primarily sailed out of Lough Derg Yacht Club and Lough Ree Yacht Club.

The event itself consisted of six Championship Races over the course of the weekend, together with races for Guest Helms, and Younger Sailors (12-25 years).

The winners of the Championship Event were as follows: 1st - Cathal Breen (Lough Derg) 155; 2nd - Frank Guy (Lough Derg) 142; 3rd - Stephen O’Driscoll (Lough Derg) 163

The Principal Race Officer was John Lefroy aboard his Yacht Phoenix.

For the competition, competing boat owners were given a ‘Welcome Gift ‘of a Commemorative Jug, locally handcrafted by Stephen Tierney from Portroe, and glazed with elements from reeds growing on Lough Derg. They also received a Commemorative Programme printed by the Nenagh Guardian.

There was approximately 300/350 people on site for the weekend providing welcome business for local shops and guesthouses.

The weekend commenced with a Cheese and Wine Reception hosted by the Flag Officers of LDYC where Commodore Joe Gilmartin welcomed all competitors, guest and friends of the Class.

A celebration dinner was held in the clubhouse on Saturday, 2nd July for 177 people followed by music and dancing.

The weekend’s celebrations concluded on Sunday with a full traditional afternoon tea – and with the Nenagh Brass Band in attendance adding to the joyousness of the occasion, and providing a cheerful atmosphere for all attending - including competitors, guests, and people from the locality

Financial support for the event was generously provided by a grant from Tipperary County Council and sponsorship from Brewen Dolphin Financial.

The Organising Committee (plus many voluntary helpers from the club) included: Anne-Marie Cox, Peter Lefroy, Rachel Guy, Noreen Sheridan, Mark O’Sullivan, Reggie Goodbody, John Tierney (Chairperson).
