Castle couple pay return visit

A Dublin couple who got engaged on the top of Nenagh Castle back in February were back in town this weekend.

The couple’s romantic story was aired on the Joe Duffy Show on RTÉ Radio, prompting management at the Abbey Court Hotel to invite them back to town once more for some pampering at the hotel.

After climbing the 101 steps to the top of the castle last February, Ciarán Hayes went down on one knee before producing an engagement ring and asking his partner Pamela Doyle if she would marry him.

“Shocked was not the word of it,” was how Pamela described the moment when speaking to this newspaper on Saturday.

“We have been together for 16 years and I was just not expected it at all. It was quite emotional,” said Pamela, who actually did say “yes”.

She said they first decided to come to Nenagh for a short break because it seemed like an easy trip after they had both finished work on Friday to just go “straight down the motorway”.

“We really picked Nenagh for no reason, but now we are glad we did because it’s so beautiful,” said Pamela.

As on their first trip, the couple brought along their two children Jade (6) and Jack (2) last weekend to enjoy the pleasures of the town.

She said the hotel management treated them so well and Rosemary Joyce, the Administrator of Nenagh Municipal District, met up with the family in the town’s new tourist office where she presented them with the series of children’s books written by local author Julian Gough.

The tourist officer Victoria Lee was also on hand to present Pamela with a bunch of flowers. They also met up with the castle Tour Guide Kevin Whelan who presented each of them with mugs emblazoned with the words, ‘I Love NaYnagh’.

Pamela said they had yet to pick a date for their wedding, which she revealed would be hopefully in April or May next year. “We’re long enough together. There’s no point in having a long engagement,” she laughed.
