Anniversary of the Civil War in Nenagh

This week marks the 100th anniversary of what’s regarded as the commencement of the Irish Civil War, which erupted with the bombardment of the Four Courts in the early hours of June 28, 1922.

For Nenagh people, the reality of things were quickly brought home when anti-Treaty IRA forces set in train an operation to capture the town on the following night, June 29.

The anniversary of this event will be remembered on Thursday evening, June 30, when Tipperary in the Decade of Revolution and Ormond Historical Society jointly host a Civil War walk around Nenagh. The walk, led by local historian John Flannery, will trace the locations of key actions in the battle for control of the town, which left two people dead, several wounded and much of the central part of the town severely damaged.

The walk will commence from the carpark at the junction of Mitchel St/Emmet Place – meet at 7.15pm for 7.30pm start. All are welcome and the event is free of charge.

Next week’s Guardian will have a feature on the dramatic events that transfixed the town and brought the harsh reality of war to the townspeople.
