Enterprise awards and debating contest

Enterprise Awards: Tina Mulhearne, Business Advisor, Local Enterprise Office, North Tipperary, visited the school recently to present the prizes and certs for the successful entries in the recent Enterprise County Final. This was a lovely occasion to celebrate the boys’ success. We would like to thank Tina and the Local Enterprise Office in Tipperary for all their support throughout the year and for kindly donating prizes and presenting certs to the boys.

The runners-up in the senior category were students Michael Kyne, Shane Hogan and Dylan Dorris, assisted by their teacher, Ms Bríd Gleeson. They developed a hand-made chocolate product through their company, Black Chocolate and were presented with a plaque for their achievements.

The most innovative award went to LMJJ Trays. Liam Grace, Michael Ryan, John Mulvihill and Jack Harford designed an innovative animal dosing tray which has proven to be remarkably successful and useful on many farms. Their teacher was Ms Gillian Wallace.

The environmental award was presented to Ecoware, who are, Joshua Lenihan, Robert Mandrila and Jim Paxman, their teacher was Brid Gleeson. The boys made very impressive eco-friendly plates and bowls which are edible and can be fed to animals.

UCC (University College Cork) Philosophical Society Munster Schools’ Debating Competition: A team of Fifth Year students, namely, Bobby Quigley, Emmet Kennedy, Donagh McSherry, Adam Hassett, Peter Slattery and Third Year, Ian Shanahan, coached by Ms Alison Collins and Mrs Helena O’Gorman, have been travelling to Cork all year. Through a combination of excellent preparation and the development of good public speaking skills, the team has made it all the way to the grand final of this prestigious and long-running competition.

They were the only school from outside of the city of Cork to progress to this stage. This was a fantastic achievement for the boys and their mentors. The motion for debate on the day was, ‘The house regrets the glorification of military conflict and of those involved.’ There were ten participating teams of two speakers. Congratulations are therefore due to Emmet and Bobby, who were in contention to the end. Donagh McSherry made it to the quarter finals of the event and Adam Hassett made it to the semi-final stage. St Joseph’s CBS extends its congratulations to worthy winners Christina Long and Faustina Dowdall, St Aloysius School, Carrigtwohill, who won the team event and James O’Connor, Douglas Community School, who won the gold medal for best individual speaker.
