St Mary’s Nenagh win Ladies Football tournament

In collaboration with Tipperary Ladies Gaelic Football Association (TGLFA), Rockwell College hosts annual tournaments across a variety of age categories with the aim of developing ladies football in Tipperary.

The tournament format consisted of round robin group games with the top two teams from each respective group progressing on to a semi -final. Schools were divided into ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ categories and fielded eleven players instead of the traditional fifteen.

St Mary’s entered two teams, one featured in the ‘C’, and narrowly missed out in the final to Presentation Thurles; the other in the ‘B’ which they won. St Mary’s had the distinction of being the only school competing from the north of the county. The team gained a wealth of experience from the recent U15 blitz on April 6th after a narrow semi-final loss to Ursuline Thurles. With much of the team underage for the U14 competition, we moved up a grade from the ‘C’ to ‘B’ division.

Remaining unbeaten for the entire tournament, they overcame Presentation Clonmel, Scoil Ruain from Killenaule and Rockwell College in the group stages. Next up was a semi-final meeting with St Ailbe’s from Tipperary Town. Scoil Mhuire were they opponents in the final who were defeated by a nine-point margin.

The victory was the school’s first ever Gaelic Football silverware and given the recent success, will be promoted to the ‘A’ grade for next year. Captained by Jane Ryan in 2nd year, the team was a combination of 1st & 2nd year students, many of whom are involved with the St Odhran’s/Silvermines club.
