Dawn swim on Lough Derg

OVER 20 swimmers and a similar number of supporters gathered at Youghal Quay early last Saturday morning for a Darkness Into Light swim/snorkel.

Entering the water at 4.15am, those involved in this fundraising event for Pieta set a tranquil, poignant scene with candles illuminating the darkness on the quay. Lough Derg Sub Aqua Club provided boat cover for the event, with thanks to Tom Shaw and Brian Hoare.

Thanks also to the musicians, who complemented the atmosphere with beautiful music by Fran Ryan on tin whistle, Ciara Maxwell on the pipes and Lorraine Banaghan singing. The candles were donated by Murphy Candles.

The Darkness Into Light swim was organised by Margaret Ryan Spillane of Nenagh to show support to all families affected by suicide and self-harm. Pieta provides free support to those in suicidal distress, those who are self-harming and those who have been bereaved by suicide. Margaret would like to thank everyone who supported this first Darkness Into Light swim at Youghal Quay.
