The stricken cruiser was heading towards the Ballina-Killaloe bridge

Local callout for Killaloe Coast Guard

At 4.55pm on Tuesday, April 19, Killaloe Coast Guard unit was tasked to a 41-foot cruiser with four persons on board that had lost engine power and was drifting towards Killaloe Bridge. The alarm was raised by the skipper of the vessel.

A crew responded within minutes but due to the strong currents the cruiser had already struck the bridge, causing damage to the vessel. A crew member was transferred to the causality vessel where the four people on board were found safe and unharmed.

An assessment of the damage was carried out, and fortunately, the vessel was not taking on water as the damage was above the water line. The occupants of the vessel were transferred to the Coast Guard Rescue boat and dropped to a jetty on the Clare shore where a Coast Guard shore team were on hand to assist.

The Rescue boat then returned to the causality vessel and a tow line was prepared, the vessel was then towed to safety and secured at the jetty with the help of the shore team.

At 6.30pm all the crews were stood down and returned to base.
