NENAGH CBS v DE LA SALLE COLLEGE

Canon Hayes Park, Bansha

Wednesday 12th January

Throw-in @ 1.00pm (E.T.)

Nenagh CBS will aim to make it two Tipperary schools in the last four of the prestigious Dr Harty Cup when they take on De La Salle College of Waterford in the last of the four quarter finals on Wednesday (today).

After Thurles CBS saw off Tipperary rivals Cashel last Saturday to set up a semi-final with Ardscoil Ris of Limerick while St Joseph’s from Tulla caused a big upset in defeating CBC from Cork and await the winners of this outstanding quarter final.

This final quarter final was deferred from last Saturday due to De La Salle having a number of players involved with the Ballygunner panel in Sunday’s Munster senior club hurling final against Kilmallock. However, the delay also suited Nenagh CBS who had ten players involved with both Kiladangan and Portroe in under 21 championship games last Sunday.

Nenagh CBS started off with a narrow 0-18 to 0-16 defeat away to Ardscoil Ris in the first round but responded to beat Gaelcholaiste Mhuire an Mhainistir Thuaidh from Cork in the second round, 2-14 to 1-13from.

Nenagh will look to former county minor Sean Kenneally to lead their attack with the Moneygall clubman in superb form for school and club last year. Toomevara’s Darragh McCarthy contributed nine points in the defeat to Ardscoil Ris, while Burgess’ Micheal Ryan is a strong presence at centre back.

Nenagh CBS have never won the Harty Cup before, having lost finals in 1990, 1996, 1997 & most recently in 2012, when they went through the backdoor to win the All-Ireland Colleges title, and they will feel if they can get past the Waterford side, another opportunity could open up with Tulla from Clare awaiting in the semi-final.

De La Salle have only played one game in the competition so far, a 0-20 to 0-18 win over Tulla in round 1, from where they received a bye to the quarter finals. Their talisman is Waterford minor Patrick Fitzgerald who scored all bar four points of their total against Tulla. Indeed, Fitzgerald was man of the match when Waterford easily defeated Tipperary in the Munster minor championship last year, scoring eleven points, five from play from corner forward.
