Silvermines restore pride with derby win

Silvermines 0-19

Templederry Kenyons 0-14

Report: Liam Hogan in Toomevara

Fourteen-man Silvermines caused an upset with a five-point win over Templederry in a hard fought Seamus O Riain Cup encounter on Saturday.

The win was just what the doctor ordered for the ‘Mines which helped them avoid a relegation battle, while there was the brief idea of a place in the last eight but Clonakenny defeated Newport in the other group game to pip them on score difference by two points.

Indeed, Silvermines had their opportunity not least in the 62nd minute when Rory Maher produced a brilliant defence splitting run and suddenly was one-on-one with Tim McCutcheon before the Templederry netminder came of his line in time to rob him. The danger was cleared before the ‘Mines won a free which Jason Forde converted to give his side a three point advantage and from there they added two more points. However, the victory came at a cost as they played a man short for the majority of the second half after Darragh McKelvey was red-carded for an off the ball incident.

One cannot to take anything away from the win but Templederry lined out without four starters in Conor Looby, Liam McCutcheon, Brian Stapleton, and Gearoid Ryan.

Once again it was the dependable Jason Forde who led the charge with a return of eleven points, including one from a sideline-cut. Playing as a sweeper he covered his patch brilliantly and had good support from Darragh Nolan, Edward Ryan and Michael Corcoran while the match winning ticket was Oisin Murphy who scored four excellent points from any distances. Andrew Hayden got in a share of work too.

Templederry once again depended on Sean Ryan who scored five points, with one excellent score coming from the right sideline with a brilliant strike over his right shoulder. Padraig O’Leary contributed his usual quota of hard work and added three points, while Ross Donnelly caught the eye with the excellent Christy Coughlan, Dale Donnelly, Michael Ryan (P) and Mattie Hogan rarely out of the action.

Points by Jason Forde and Oisin Murphy (2), one either side of a Sean Ryan reply, helped Silvermines take a 0-5 to 0-1 lead after ten minutes. In the 20th minute David Shanahan denied Eanna Murray with a good save but the next five minutes had the ‘Mines in charge as they went further in front through Andrew Hayden and two Jason Forde.

But Templederry were determined not to let their neighbours out of sight as Ross & Dale Donnelly scored quickly followed by a Sean Ryan point on the wing. A ninety metre free by Forde made it 0-10 to 0-7 but Eanna Murray pulled one back to see two points separating the teams at the break.

The second half was seven minutes old before the next score arrived. Meanwhile there was a small scuffle which resulted in Darragh McKelvey going for an early shower after referee Alan Tierney consulted his umpires. When things settled down both Jason Forde (free) and Padraig O’Leary traded scores before Ross Donnelly levelled matters in the 40th minute.

The next five minutes were dominated by great scores with Oisin Murphy edging the ‘Mines in front on two occasions only to see a response each time through Sean Ryan who indulged in a quick one-two move with Adrian Ryan after the former’s quick sideline ball. After Andrew Hayden made it 0-14 to 0-13 it was time for the final water-break and when play resumed a hard working Conor McKelvey won a free for Forde to convert in the 47th minute.

The next ten minutes was devoid of scores until Adrian Ryan broke the deadlock before Forde extended the lead with a free following a foul on Andrew Hayden. With play reaching added time it was the ‘Mines on the move and pulled clear for a deserved five-point victory.
