Carey rescues draw for Treacy’s

Sean Treacy’s 0-19

Killenaule 0-19

A draw was a fitting result to this Group 3 Seamus O Riain Cup game, played in Boherlahan on Saturday.

Both teams served up a good hard but fair game of hurling with Sean Treacy’s grabbing the equaliser, from a Pat Carey free, almost on the stroke of full time.

Fresh from their South Final win over Mullinahone the previous weekend, Killenaule went into this game as favourites, but the 2019 Intermediate champions had other ideas, as they took the game to their opponents, and led by three points coming towards the end of the opening half.

Killenaule started the better and were two points to the good inside two minutes with scores from Ciaran O’Dwyer (free) and Michael Doyle. Treacy’s were back on level terms by the fourth minute with points from Tom Hickey and Pat Carey.

Killenaule continued to dominate and points from Gus Browne, Eoin Shaw and O’Dwyer but Sean Treacy’s hit back with a brace from Pat Carey to cut the deficit to the minimum by the first water break.

Treacy’s came more into the game in the second quarter, with Mikey Feehan and Chris Egan in defence, and Seanie Ryan and Pat Carey particularly impressive.

Shane Stapleton hit a long-range point from well inside his own half and coupled with Pat Carey’s accuracy in attack they went in at half time leading by the minimum, 0-11 to 0-10. Ciaran O’Dwyer hit four points during this second quarter for the South champions with Jimmy Feehan coming more into the game also, hitting a good point from out on the side-line.

The third quarter started with a flurry of scores, four in the opening two minutes, including two long range efforts from Jody Ryan as Sean Treacy’s opened up a two-point lead before points from Ciaran O’Dwyer and Eoin Shaw tied up the game for the seventh time.

Pat Carey and Ciaran O’Dwyer exchanged points before Treacy’s had their best spell in the game, firstly Pat Deegan got in for a point and was then denied a goal with a top class save by Jonathan Gleeson.

Pat Carey salvaged something from the attack when he converted the resulting 65 to put the West men two up at the second water break.

Killenaule shaded the final quarter as the Treacy’s forwards found the Killenaule defence hard to breach. Tom Stakelum, Ciaran O’Dwyer and Joe O’Dwyer landed points to draw level with eight minutes remaining. Ciaran O’Dwyer (free) edged Killenaule in front by the 53rd minute but they were unable to add to their tally during the final seven minutes.

Both sets of backs were well on top in these closing stages and it took a Pat Carey point from a free, almost on the stroke of full time, from the halfway line out near the stand to tie up this highly entertaining game.

Both teams will feel that they left the game behind them, but overall a draw was a fair result. For Killenaule Jonathan Gleeson kept them in the game at a vital stage. Joe O’Dwyer was commanding at the back while Ciaran O’Dwyer hit eleven points. Paudie Feehan, Michael Doyle and Eoin Shaw were the pick of the forwards.

For Sean Treacy’s, Sean Hickey, Mikey Feehan and Chris Egan held the defence well. Jody Ryan and Pat Deegan held their own at midfield. Paddy Carey, Tom Hickey and Seanie Ryan, especially in the opening half, tried hard.
