Toomevara were much too good for Silvermines in a one-sided North Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship first round clash last Wednesday.

Two goals inside the opening eight minutes laid the foundation for the Toomevara victory as with their better all-round fifteen, they showed the ‘Mines no mercy for the rest of the game.

Toomevara’s ability to pick off the points at will was the difference with nine players, including five of the front six, getting on the scoresheet. Overall Toome scored 2-16 from play and Robbie Quirke led the way with the midfielder scoring five points from play. Paul Ryan was another leader, not forgetting the exploits of a very fit looking David Young with Mark McCarthy well involved.

Overall, the winners had far too much power and speed off the mark for a Silvermines side that depended too much on Jason Forde. Ruairi Maher played his part too in his side’s bid to keep in touch.

Short of Josh McCarthy through suspension and both Kenny Ryan and Kevin McCarthy through injury, Toomevara made the perfect start with Alan Ryan finding the net after thirteen seconds. Thirty second later David Young added a point.

Silvermines opened their scoring with two Jason Forde frees but with the ‘Mines defence as porous as a strainer as Toomevara scored goal number two as a three man move involving Russell Quirke, Darren Delaney and Paul Ryan saw the later hauled down in the large square. Up stepped Mark McCarthy and his blaster gave David Shanahan no chance.

Long range points from Robbie Quirke and Jason Ryan increased Toome’s lead to seven after ten minutes, but Jason Forde high fielding (from Shanahan’s puckout) kept the ‘Mines in sight of the leaders.

Two minutes later Mark McCarthy’s free had Toomevara 2-4 to 0-3 in front. Jason Forde replied with a free before Colm Canning had Toome seven to the good leading up to the first water-break.

The break in play appeared to have been a benefit to Silvermines. Following Robbie Quirke’s second point, the ‘Mines hit back with 1-2 in three minutes with Oisin Murphy making most of poor marking to score a goal. Ruairi Maher followed up with a point before Jason Forde added a free from close to the touchline cutting the margin to three points.

It was an encouraging period for Silvermines but in the 23rd minute it was about to change. Firstly, Mark McCarthy’s free sailed over and one minute later Alan Ryan beat David Shanahan with a rocket from a narrow angle quickly followed by Jason Ryan long range free to make it 3-8 to 1-6.

Points from Oisin Murphy and Ruairi Maher kept the ‘Mines in the frame, but Toome went eight clear after Darren Delaney and another long range free by Jason Ryan went between the posts.

At this stage with the half time whistle fast approaching there was enough time for one score apiece with Forde supplying a free and Delaney responding from play to see Toome leading 3-11 to 1-9 at the changeover.

After the teams returned it was the dependable Robbie Quirke who notched over his third point for the Greyhounds, closely followed by another McCarthy free.

Three pointed frees by Forde kept the ‘Mines hanging on but Eoin Brislane’s men had a mission and their defence began getting in on the act of scoring as Colm Canning and Conor O’Farrell picked of two great scores closely followed by another Robbie Quirke score.

It was 3-16 to 1-13 to at the final water-break and throughout the final quarter the game became lacklustre as Toome went through the motions and but still outscored the ‘Mines 0-7 to 0-2 with Mark McCarthy kicking the ball over the bar followed by a super Paul Ryan point. Robbie Quirke scored his fifth and with Jason Ryan adding a free there was more scores from David Young, McCarthy, and Ryan leaving no doubt that Toome are in with a shout this year.
