The Quiet Land will be broadcast at 8pm on Sunday.

Borris’ man’s award-winning drama on RTE

The multi award-winning play, The Quiet Land, by Borrisokane playwright and actor, Malachy McKenna will air again on RTÉ Radio 1 on Sunday, June 20, at 8pm.

The Quiet Land, starring the Late Barry Cassin and Kevin Flood, was the outright winner of the 2014 PJ O’ Connor Radio Drama awards and it went on to win the Gold Medal for Radio Drama for RTE at the World Festival of Radio Drama in New York in 2015. The stage version of the play, starring Des Keogh and Derry Power, has had numerous professional tours both at home and abroad and is also a regular on the Amateur Dramatic circuit where it won the All Ireland Amateur Drama Festival with Palace Players, Cork.

“The Quiet Land is my heartfelt tribute to a rare breed of forgotten men who live a long way in off the road,” says the playwright.

“In the hidden Ireland off the new EU infrastructure of motorway and ring-road, two elderly farmers lean on a fence and talk in the low-key code of near neighbours; and the transcript of their talk is a little masterpiece of hint and intimation, for these men are more vulnerable than venerable in a country where old age has no cachet.”

RTÉ producer Aidan Mathews said: “The Quiet Land is also a master-class, served as it is by a brace of actors - Kevin Flood and Barry Cassin - who’ve accumulated between them a hundred and thirty years of rich theatrical experience.”
