Nenagh Choral Society raises €7k

Members of Nenagh Choral Society have walked almost 6,000km over five weeks to raise badly needed funds for the upkeep of the Scouts Hall and in the process raised an astonishing €7,000.

Every member of the 35-strong group completed over 200km individually, averaging 8km each day. This proved to be one of the most enjoyable fundraisers the Society has undertaken, with the group keeping in touch with each other on WhatsApp and sending in some magnificent photographs of local beauty spots, which were posted on the Society Facebook page.

Scouts Hall Board of Directors Chairman Ger McCarthy thanked all the members who took part in the fundraiser and also the public again for supporting it financially. “As well as sponsoring our walkers’ cards, many people contributed to our GoFundMe page,” he added. Society Chairperson Margaret McGee added that many members intended to continue the walking, such was the enjoyment they got from it. Indeed, this might become an annual event.

Society Secretary Greg Browne added that as well as asking for help, the Society used the fundraiser to support the Darkness Into Light fundraiser for Pieta House. Through the initiative of Society Assistant PRO Maire Long, several of the walkers registered for the Pieta House annual event. They met at 5am on Saturday morning and walked the 5km as a socially distancing group.

Veteran member Gerry Scanlon was among a 12-person group joined by our youngest aspiring member, 7-year-old Kayden Hogan Long, as the early risers braved a wet morning for the brisk walk as the darkness literally turned into light. A socially distant cup of tea brought our fundraiser to a close with everyone delighted with what was achieved.
