The main street of Toomevara has been enhanced with attractive planting.

Grant for Toomevara

A sum of €25,000 to add further beauty to the village of Toomevara has been presented on behalf of Tipperary County Council by its Cathaoirleach Councillor Michael Smith to the local Community Development Association.

The association, established in 2013, has grown from strength to strength over the past eight years and the great work it carries out in enhancing Toomevara has been the subject of much favourable comment.

Association Secretary Mary Casey said: “The aim of the committee is to improve and enhance the appearance of the village and we in the association would like to acknowledge the great support from the local community.”

Mary paid tribute to the previous groups of volunteers over the years who put in place infrastructure that impoved the image of the village and who developed green areas, renovated stone work and planted shrubs.

Association Chairman Tommy Shanahan said: “I would like thank Tipperary County Council for their help and support with the provision of funds under the Tús Scheme, a grant towards the erecting of a steel railings around The Square and recently the council included Toomevara in the Village Enhancement Scheme with a grant of €25,000.”

Tommy said the latter grant will be used to embark on a new enhancement project in the village. “We would be delighted to receive any suggestions, and the committee would welcome suggestions from anyone with an idea on how the funds would be best spent,” said Tommy.

Over the years the committee has carried out numerous projects, including planting of beech hedging on approach roads to the village, new stone name signs and flower beds at entrances to all housing estates. It also puts up recycled plastic planters and hanging baskets, which are upgraded annually in areas such as the village square and beside the Pallas River. On top of all this heather beds have been planted in the lay-by area.

The committee recently carried out litter picking on all approach roads to the village and were delighted with the help they received.

Tommy said he would like to acknowledge and thank members of the development committee for their work, their vision and enthusiasm and the local business sector and members of the community, who have been extremely supportive of all fundraising and initiatives undertaken.

Mary put out the call for anyone who would like to contribute to the great work being done: “We always welcome new volunteers and ideas and suggestions to help improve our village,” she concluded.
