CLUB FOCUS - Burgess/Duharra Camogie Club

Burgess Camogie Club was formed in 1985 and enjoyed great success at Juvenile level winning many county titles.

In 2009 the current camogie club, Burgess/Duharra, was formed. They currently have over 100 players, ranging from 5 years old up to adults, fielding all teams from under 6 to Senior.

The formation of Burgess/Duharra Camogie club led to great success, reaching the county senior final in its first year but came up short. A year later in 2010 they won the senior title for the first time before going onto complete a record breaking seven-in-a-row between 2012 and 2018.

The club progressed to win 2 Munster Club titles in 2016 and 2017 but fell short to Slaughtneil of Derry and Sarsfields of Galway in subsequent All-Ireland semi-finals.

However, All-Ireland success did come in the 7’s format where Burgess/Duharra won the Kilmacud Crokes 7’s in back-to-back years in 2017 and 2018.

Since the foundation of the club to the present day, Burgess/Duharra have had plenty of success throughout the years winning county titles at under 12, 14, 16 and minor grades, as well as U14 Feile na nGael and U16 Pan Celtic competition. In 2013 the club won its first ever Munster title when the Junior ‘A’s were crowned Munster League Champions.

Burgess/Duharra Camogie club has always had a good representation on Tipperary panels right from development squads to senior level.

Prior to the formation of the current club, many players were involved in Tipperary’s golden era at senior level where they won five All-Ireland’s in six years from 1999 to 2004, including Therese Brophy, Sheena Howard, Eimear McDonnell, Sinéad Nealon, Áine Mulcahy, Deirdre McDonnell and Ruth Barry.

There were also Intermediate All-Ireland winners in 1997 in the form of Niamh Bonnar, Therese Brophy, Sinéad Nealon, Sinéad Collins, Helena Frawley and Áine Hogan.

In 2001, Tipperary won the All-Ireland Junior Camogie title where Orla Hogan and Sinéad Nealon were also involved.

Tipperary won two All-Ireland Minor titles in 2011 and 2016 with Burgess/Duharra having the following players involved: Caoimhe Maher, Tara O’Brien, Aisling O’Halloran and Katie Flaherty, while Tim Meagher was manager in the 2011 success.

At Under 16 level, Tipperary have won five All-Ireland titles in 1990, 1992, 1993, 2011, 2013 with Therese Brophy, Ciara Burns, Fiona Hanrahan, Áine Hogan, Marie Hogan, Christine Kennedy, Síle Kyne, Nuala Nealon, Sínead Nealon, Caoimhe Maher, Tara Kennedy, Jenny Grace, Cara Cottam, Claire Kearns, Amanda Egan, Aisling Gregan, Ciardha Maher, Tara O’Brien and Shona O’Donoghue all winning medals.

Members of Burgess/Duharra Camogie club have also won many awards throughout the years.

In terms of Camogie All-Stars, Therese Brophy and Eimear McDonnell were selected twice in 2003 and 2005 with Trish O’Halloran being the clubs most recent winner in 2008. At Intermediate level, Jenny Grace was selected as a Soaring All Star for her performances in 2018.

At club level, Eimear McDonnell and Amy Kennedy have won Munster Senior Club Player of the Year in 2016 and 2017 respectively, while Caoimhe Maher won a Tipp FM Player of the Year award.

Club President Donie Nealon was the first inductee into the Nenagh Guardian Sports Hall of Fame in 2016, while the club itself has also won many Nenagh Guardian and Annerville Sports Awards.

The club welcome new members every year. For younger members, they place a lot of emphases on having fun, learning new skills and making friends for life in a safe, friendly environment.
