Farm podcast featuring Tipp farmer
‘Out the Gap’, the Irish food and farming podcast was initiated last spring by Drangan based farmer, Noel Clancy.
Rather than being recorded in studio format or interviewing people over the internet, the format of this lively show involves the host meeting people in their own rural environment and recording them ‘on the go’ so to speak. Clancy’s friendly and chatty style of hosting and general production leads to the listener feeling that they are listening in on an informal ‘chat’ rather than an interview.
“The idea of this podcast is to allow people to get their story across without any time pressure. Very often you hear sound bites on radio programmes etc but it never tells the whole story. Hopefully the podcast fills this gap by going more in depth” according to Noel. “Probably my biggest challenge has been producing the shows and editing because I had no experience in sound editing up until I started this project,” Noel says.
The podcast is both informative, insightful as well as fun and so far the monthly shows have taken him from recording out on the Condon’s hill farm in the Knockmealdown mountains all the way to the Anner river valley in Mullinahone. He has spent a night ringing Barn Owl chicks near Thurles and an evening packing and sorting eggs on Magner’s poultry farm in Moyglass, near Fethard. Noel also spent a night amongst the cows on a robotic dairy farm perched on the edge of Kilkenny city. The most recent show took him to ‘Crocanoir’, the former dairy farm under Slievenamon, now transformed in to a holiday cottage business which also has a small concert venue on site.
“It is a privilege to have the opportunity to meet such an array of guests and to get a glimpse into their lives and to see how they operate. Covid has been a challenge but as the show format means that we record generally outdoors, we can overcome this issue,” said Noel.
Recording was suspended during mid-spring when the first ‘lockdown’ restrictions hit,” according to Noel.
The show is published monthly and is free to download on the website, outthegap.libsyn.com but is also available to subscribe to on Spotify, Apple, Amazon streaming services and a host of others.
