Tipp hurlers and footballers to play on the same day in Munster Championship

By Shane Brophy

The Tipperary senior hurlers and footballers will play on the same day in the opening round of the Munster Championship after the fixtures for the restructured competitions were confirmed this week.

With the congested time-frame of the championship and with both the hurling and football championships starting on the same weekend, it wasn’t possible to have counties playing on different days with both Tipperary and Waterford officials having to be split up during the course of the weekend.

The Tipperary senior footballers will host Clare in their Munster quarter final at Semple Stadium at 1.00pm on Sunday, 1st November and three hours later Liam Sheedy’s senior hurlers will play the winners of Clare or Limerick in a Munster semi-final at the LIT Gaelic Grounds or Pairc Ui Chaoimh, depending on the winner of the game.

It was agreed that Home and Away arrangements would continue for Senior Football, Under 20 Hurling and Minor Football. However, as Senior and Minor Hurling have been organised on a round-robin basis for the past two seasons, the Home and Away arrangements would be disrupted so those two competitions will be played at neutral venues for 2020.

The early rounds of the Munster Under 20 Hurling Championship will be played on Monday evenings with Tipperary hosting Clare in the quarter final, and should John Devane’s charges progress the semi-final against Waterford will be played on Bank Holiday Monday, 26th October.

The Tipperary minor hurlers will be the first into championship action when they play Kerry in a quarter final on Sunday 18th October in Limerick and should they progress they will play Waterford in a semi-final in Cork on Friday 30th October, during the school mid-term break. The minor footballers host Clare in a quarter final on Saturday 24th October and should they be successful they will travel to the winner of Limerick or Waterford for a semi-final two weeks later.

Because of Covid-19 restrictions, only one game will be played per venue at any one time so no double-headers have been arranged.
All fixtures are knockout/result on the day although in the case of the Senior Hurling Championship, for the four counties that do not win the Munster Final, there will be a second chance via the All-Ireland Qualifiers.

All fixture details are subject to change in line with Covid-19 related developments in advance of each fixture.
