Sheedy backs GAA split season

Tipperary senior hurling manager Liam Sheedy has backed the proposals for a defined split season between club and county, saying “there is definitely the potential to do something good that will work well for clubs and for county teams.”

Speaking to the Nenagh Guardian this week, the two-time All-Ireland winning manager says there is so much momentum behind a defined season for club and counties, brought about by the pandemic, that it has to bring about change.

“We can say with certainty there will be change off the back of this and change will be for the better,” Sheedy said.
“Definitely, there is a better way of doing it that how we have structured it previously and we will be a lot closer to be better at this based on how this has worked over the last couple of weeks.”

The proposals from the GPA, which were discussed by the GAA’s Fixtures Review Committee last week suggest an inter-county season that runs from February to July, with the club championships, commencing in August. However, Liam Sheedy is a fan of allowing the club players to go first each year with the inter-county season following on, as it will later this year.

“I really like the idea to get to see the club players in action,” he said.
“I like the club one first as it is a nice run-in for players. They get up to speed with the game, they can get up and running before they step it up for inter-county.
“There is definitely the potential to do something good that will work well for clubs and for county teams.”
