Pedestrianisation trial for Nenagh street

Tipperary Co Council has advertised a proposal to pedestrianise part of Hanley's Place, Nenagh, on a trial basis.

The proposal relates to the part of Hanley’s Place from the exit of the car park to the junction with Sarsfield Street. A six-month closure has been advertised, from August 17th next to February 14th. The purpose of the closure is to facilitate pedestrianisation of this area in the interests of enhancing pedestrian safety.

This arrangement is being done on a trial basis for six months and will be reviewed at the end of that period. The council advises that the legislative basis for this proposal is as a temporary road closure under the Roads Act & Regulations. It involves a prohibition on vehicular traffic on this portion of the road - however, vehicular access to the car park and access by pedestrians will not be affected.

This part of Hanley’s Place is narrow, there is no footpath for pedestrian safety and the sightline for cars accessing Sarsfield St/Mitchel St means that vehicles have to come out onto the road, thus impacting on the safety of pedestrians on Sarsfield Street.
In addition, work will be commencing in the near future on demolition of buildings at Mitchel St/Emmet Place.

It is the council's view that the pedestrianisation of this portion of Hanley’s Place will enhance the safety and comfort of pedestrians accessing businesses on this street. Meanwhile, car parking will still be available in the car park.
