Shelters are also being considered in Roscrea, Ballina, Newport and Borrisokane.

New bus shelters planned for Nenagh

The National Transport Authority has offered to fund provision of disabled access bus shelters in Nenagh and will assess the possibility of adding further shelters in Roscrea, Ballina, Newport and Borrisokane, among other Tipperary towns.

Several local councillors have in recent years called for shelters to protect people waiting for busses, many of whom have had to wait for a long time in poor weather conditions. The issue was raised at last week's meeting of Tipperary Co Council, after which Director of Services Marcus O'Connor provided councillors with an update on the situation.

There are currently 109 approved bus stops in the county. These are currently being reviewed by the National Transport Authority (NTA) and the Department of Transport, and this number may reduce slightly. In order to be approved, a bus stop has to have a minimum of five recognised services per day.

Disabled access bus shelters: The NTA has offered to fund these shelters at four locations in the county including the two stops at Stereame on Nenagh's Limerick road. Shelters will also be provided at Carrick-on-Suir and Thurles, while suitable locations are currently being examined in Roscrea.

Possible further locations for bus shelters: Following consultation with the NTA, Tipperary County Council has also submitted a proposal for eight further bus shelters at the following eight approved stops (these are subject to NTA approval and funding): Clonmel (Davis Road and Gladstone Street), Templemore, Horse and Jockey, Borrisokane, Ballina, Newport, Grangemockler.
