Checkpoints will be stepped up.

Garda warning over travel restrictions

Gardai are warning that checkpoints will be stepped up in the Nenagh district to prevent people travelling to lakeside areas, with Covid-19 travel restrictions to remain in place for several more weeks.
Large numbers of people reportedly headed for Lough Derg last Saturday to enjoy the good weather, despite the 5km restriction on non-essential travel. Gardaí set up checkpoints in a number of areas and reportedly turned back several dozen motorists trying to make their way from Nenagh town to Dromineer, a distance of 10km.
Amid national reports of growing public complacency with the Covid-19 restrictions, a local garda spokesperson this week confirmed that checkpoints will be stepped up to prevent people travelling to the lake from outlying areas. This will continue until the travel restriction is expanded to 20km on June 8th. The spokesman appealed to the public to abide by Government guidelines on preventing the spread of the virus.
Meanwhile, there have been several drugs seizures in the Nenagh district over recent days, including one substantial haul of almost €60,000 worth of suspected cannabis in Kilcommon last Monday.
Members of the Divisional Drugs Unit assisted by local gardaí conducted a search and discovered 69 cannabis plants with an estimated value of €55,000. They also found approximately €2,000 of cultivated cannabis.
