New Labour Party leader Alan Kelly

Kelly crowned Labour Party leader

Tipperary TD Alan Kelly is the new leader of the Labour Party, taking over from Brendan Howlin. The result of Friday’s election count was:
From a postal ballot of 2,210 eligible voters, there was a total poll of 1,916 with one spoiled vote. Alan Kelly received 1,047 votes while Aodhán Ó Ríordáin got 868 votes; the quota was 958 votes.
Labour Party official Conor Power said: "Due to the extraordinary circumstances arising from the public health measures in place to combat the Covid-19 pandemic this was a different election. Together with Brain McDowell, general secretary, I have been able to conduct the election fairly and transparently. The high turnout is also a testament to the commitment of the party members. The counting of votes has been undertaken in very different circumstances to those that would ordinarily pertain. I have conducted the count alone and in accordance with social distancing advice. The candidates, their agents and party officers have been able to view the count remotely.
"I want in particular to thank a number of people for helping facilitate this election,
•    The General Secretary Brian McDowell and staff of the Labour Party
•    Mazars and Business Print and their staff for facilitating the count and receipt of votes
•    An Post and their staff across the country whose work ensured the postal ballot was a success.
•    And finally the individual candidates and their election agents for their co-operation during the election campaign.
"I wish Alan Kelly every success as leader."
