Toomevara got out of jail in a nail-biting finish to this County Senior Hurling Championship Preliminary quarter-final, twice coming from behind with time running out to see off the challenge of Mullinahone, after extra time, on Sunday.

What was a rather drab tie, devoid of championship fervour, it only came to life as the game ebbed towards its conclusion with Mullinahone looking set to record a surprise win over their more fancied rivals.

The quality of the fare fell below expectations but the encounter was redeemed by the tense finish which gave a fair-sized attendance something to cheer about.

Toome had failed to run up for over fifty minutes. They had the better of things in the first half but despite some slack finishing and their lack-lustre performance they still made it to the interval with a 0-9 to 0-4 advantage over a Mullinahone outfit that were equally unimpressive with Eoin Kelly uncharacteristically squandering chances from four frees, albeit not easy ones, but yet well within the compass of the C J Kickhams’ sharpshooter.
