Nenagh powerlifter appeals for funds

Powerlifting champion Jesse Moran of Nenagh is appealing for public support as he prepares to represent Ireland in a US open competition.

Jesse (24) lifted a record-breaking total of 900kg between the backsquat, deadlift and benchpress at the IPO National Powerlifting Championships earlier this year. Lifting in the 110kg bodyweight category (he weighs 104kg), Jesse has amassed enough Wilks (means of measuring relative strength of powerlifters) to enter the US open event in California next April.

“This is one of the biggest invitational powerlifting contests in the world; the top lifters from all over the world will be here,” Jesse said. “After I had my most successful season this year, becoming the Irish Raw No 1, my total and Wilks were enough to be able to compete.”

But in order to do that, he’s going to need financial support from the community. A friend suggested that he set up a Go Fund Me web page.

“My aim is to go over, put up a huge performance, leave a big impression and put Irish powerlifting on the map on the biggest stage there is,” Jesse wrote on his Go Fund Me page. “This was an opportunity I had to take.”

The local lifter, who works in town at Carey Glass International and trains at the Fitness Factory, said he became “overwhelmed” when weighing up the costs involved. These include flights, accommodation and additional expenses on top of the entry fee.

“I will save everything I possibly can but these are costs that I certainly would not be able to cover with my job alone,” Jesse said. He has set a fundraising target of €1,000 and said any donation, large or small, would be greatly appreciated.

“€1,000 will only be a small fraction and basically only cover my flights, but it will help massively on my journey of getting to the US. Thank you!”
