Holycross/Ballycahill began their Séamus Ó Riain Cup campaign with a convincing victory over Silvermines on Sunday, staking a definite claim as title-contenders in this competition.

Despatched by Templederry at the quarter-final stage in 2018, Holycross are a side with slick individual hurlers and some devastating fire-power in attack, two facts which they reinforced throughout the first-half, exposing the Silvermines back-line to hit four goals.

Led by midfielder Michael Doyle and the razor-sharp striking of Darragh Woods, they inflicted most of their damage within the final quarter of the field, with Doyle registering the first of his two goals after just six minutes, before Liam Moloney cemented their dominance with another goal some four minutes later.

It was as demoralising a start as could be imagined for Silvermines, but they kept themselves afloat by working persistently in the middle third, eventually earning a number of frees which Jason Forde converted in his own familiar, masterly style.
