At the launch of the junior parkrun in Kilcolman

Junior parkrun for Kilcolman

A week on from the first parkrun in Cloughjordan, a junior event begins this Sunday at Burgess GAA grounds, Kilcolman.

It is a free 2km timed run for 4 to 14-year-olds which gets underway at 9:30am. The event is aimed at getting kids moving and enjoying physical activity in a fun environment. It would involve doing just under 3 laps of the grass area at the Burgess GAA grounds in Kilcolman.

The parkrun ethos is one of participation and inclusion, with real emphasis on the event as a run and not a race. Every child can participate in junior parkrun, regardless of ability. From first to last, each child gains a great sense of achievement and a sense of having taken part in an immensely positive community event. The children of Nenagh and the surrounding areas now have a local run in which they can participate.

An initiative like parkrun is unquestionably of huge benefit in nurturing both the mental health and physical health in our children. Through junior parkrun we can foster a no-pressure environment where physical exercise is fun and can become the norm for local children. Running is a habit for life, and childhood exercise has been shown to increase the odds of being a healthy and active adult.

Huge support for bringing the event to Nenagh has come from Burgess GAA and Sports Partnership Ireland. Participants can register for free at www.parkrun.ie/burgesscountytipperary-juniors/
