Labour councillor Fiona Bonfield has welcomed the news that a number of towns and villages around the Newport area will have road improvement works carried out over the next three years.

Following on from the preparation of a new three-year road programm, Cllr Bonfield welcomed the news that a number of roads in her own town of Newport will have substantative work carried out.

The sections signed off include Cork Road from the hurling field to Ryan's Centra Shop, the Black Road from O'Sullivan's Corner to the funeral home and from entrance to Stonehall to Rockvale Graveyard.

"This is great news for the town with some footpath repairs to be carried out later on in October of this year," Cllr Bonfield said. "I am delighted that the council have stood by me and this results from numerous representations and a motion that I submitted to the council on. I also worked hard to ensure the village of Killoscully and Ballinahinch are included and also the village in the Silvermines.

"The Grange Road in Ballina up by the school as well as other sections around the Ballina have also been included.

"But one area in Ballina that I worked tirelessly on with Deputy Alan Kelly was Marine Village housing estate. A spend of €80,000 will be spent down here in 2019 to complete the taking in charge of this estate."
