National League title for Nenagh Olympic AC

Someone once said that the only thing that makes Americans American is their constitution. Well in Ireland we do things slightly differently. Sure we love our country but we probably love our province just a little more and out county just a little more and for that matter our town or parish, well you get the idea.

In Nenagh when it comes to sport as in many other endeavors we punch way above our weight. This weekend alone the young Éire Óg hurlers won the national Community Games Hurling title and the senior men’s athletics team also won a National team title, winning Division 1 of the Athletics Ireland National League, earning them promotion to the Premier Division in 2019.

The Nenagh team were never in front all during the competition and it came down to needing a win from the very last event the 4x400m to secure the title. So in some uniquely Freudian quirk of faith the four men on the relay team, Dan Finnerty, Paul White, Tom Hennessy and Liam Finn have been running together since they were 9 or 10 years of age. Now 12 or 13 years later they did what they have been doing all those years winning national relay titles.
