John McGrath is shadowed by Cork's Sean O'Donoghue

Tipp stood up and were counted - McGrath

John McGrath was the epitome of the contrast of Tipperary's performance against Cork on Sunday, quiet in the first half, dominant in the second half scoring five points from play and making the hit on Cork's Sean O'Donoghue which enabled Jake Morris to fire over the equaliser.

“We’ll have to give him a nice little thank you when we go back in,” admitted the Loughmore clubman not long after the final whistle.

“He’s not on the panel that long but you can see how sharp he was in there to knock over his point. It’s a team game and we need a lot of guys and he did his job today.”

While Tipperary were as good as written off at half time, McGrath admitted things were pretty calm at half time as they knew why they were struggling.

He said: “Cork were really clever with the ball and we needed to shove up a little bit. Mark Ellis was a real out-ball for them in the first half. We tightened up on that in the second half and just added that extra bit of pressure.

“We backed ourselves to go man for man and trusted ourselves and that showed in the second half."
