Portumna's Mike Denver won Album of the Year and Entertainer of the Year at the RTÉ Irish Country Music awards.

RTÉ music winners heading to Moneygall for Obama Country Fest!

So, after all of the talk about it and the build-up to it, last Friday night finally saw the first ever RTÉ Irish Country Music Awards take place in Dublin during a televised 90-minute show hosted by Daniel O'Donnell.

And if you're heading to Moneygall for this year's Obama Country Music Fest this Sunday (July 3rd), well aren't you in luck! Because not just one, but two of the big winners from Friday night will be taking to the Obama Fest stage.

Mike Denver won two of the night's most prestigious awards, with the Portumna man taking home the prize for Album of the Year for his 'Cut Loose' collection, and also what was perhaps the most coveted title of all (as it was one of only two which could be voted on by the public) that of Entertainer of the Year. So with Mike on the line-up, there's certainly going to be a party atmosphere in Moneygall next Sunday!

But there'll be another man bringing his own unique style of partying to the ancestral home of President Barack Obama, and that's Robert Mizzell, another of the biggest names in Irish country music today. Robert won the hotly contested Best Video for his song, 'Day Job', holding off tough competition from Niamh McGlinchey for her version of 'These Boots Were Made For Walking', from Newcomer of the Year winner Cliona Hagan for 'We're All Gonna Die Someday' (more upbeat than it sounds, believe it or not!), as well as from another young lady tipped for great things, Aine Crehan for her song, 'Gravy.' Viewers who tuned in on the night will have noticed Robert looking particularly suave as he accepted his award from Linda Martin, and with good reason as Robert was dressed for the night's celebrations by Anthony Kearns and his team of Guy Clothing in Tullamore.

In fact, as well as having their upcoming Obama Country Fest appearance in common (and incidentally, both Mike and Robert also performed at last year's very first Obama Fest), the two country giants share a connection to Tullamore too. As just mentioned, Robert collected his award in an outfit from Guy Clothing, while Mike, who was honoured with the Best Album award for 'Cut Loose' visited TRAX in the Bridge Centre as part of a promotional tour for the album only a few weeks ago.

There was no shortage of fans waiting to get their own signed copy of 'Cut Loose' on the day, and of course, a selfie or two with Mike as well. And as always, Mike had time for every last fan who showed up to meet him. With those scenes repeated across the country, his success on Friday night was no surprise!

Mike Denver and Robert Mizzell appear at the Obama Country Fest 2016 this coming Sunday, July 3rd, in Moneygall. Also performing on the day will be; Pete Kennedy, Trudi Lalor, Olivia Douglas, Pat Costello, Keelan, Fran Curry & Muriel O'Connor, Adrian Ryan, Declan Nerney, and Barry Kirwan.

Tipp FM will be broadcasting from the festival from 11am – 2pm. They will have the debut radio show from Trudi Lalor, 'Premier Country with Trudi Lalor', and her show will be launched live on air in Moneygall. It will feature interviews and giveaways with all of the artists performing in Moneygall.

Tickets for Obama Country Fest 2016 are only €20, with under-12s free! Tickets are available on the day, and also from Ticketmaster.
