1916 commemoration in Shinrone

The village of Shinrone will hold a day of remembrance this Sunday, March 6th, to honour the leaders of the 1916 Rising.

This event will begin in St Mary's Church with an Ecunemical Service led by local parish priest, Rev Fr Frank Meehan at 2pm sharp.
After this short service, the assembly will proceed to the nearby Dr Patrick J Doyle Memorial Cross. Dr Patrick J Doyle, a Ferbane native, was a GP in the Moneygall/Shinrone district from 1920-1964. He was a devout nationalist who joined the IRB whilst studying medicine at UCD. The cross was erected in his memory and unveiled in 1966 by Eamonn Bulfin, a Birr native who hoisted the flag over the GPO at the commencement of the Easter Rising.
A number of acts of remembrance will be carried out at the Dr Patrick J Doyle Memorial Cross. The Proclamation will first be read out, followed by the laying of a wreath of remembrance. The national flag will then be raised at full mast to conclude the cermony.
The Pipe Major will then lead the gathering to the nearby community centre where an exhibition of 1916 era memorabilia will be on display. Such memorabilia will not have been seen by the public before, and for this the Heritage Group are grateful for the loan of such items for this historic event.
All are welcome to this event and are encouraged to arrive early. Refreshments will be available on the day.
