New Hospital Unit opens for Mid-West

UL Hospitals Group is delighted to announce the phased opening of the Leben Building in University Hospital Limerick.
The Leben Building has been developed by the HSE in conjunction with three charitable partners: TLC4CF, the Parkinson's Association of Ireland through their regional branch, and the Mid-Western Hospitals Development Trust. It
This week the first phase of the building came on stream with 19 beds in the neurology/stroke unit along with five beds in the new cystic fibrosis adult inpatient unit. The remaining five beds in the neurology/stroke unit will open by the end of this year once extra staffing has been secured from the ongoing recruitment campaign. It is planned to open the outpatient CF unit, the dermatology unit and symptomatic breast unit in the first quarter 2016.
The building will provide greatly enhanced care to inpatients and outpatients in state-of-the-art facilities and its opening will also free up bed capacity elsewhere in the hospital.
Minister for Health Leo Varadkar said: “This is a great day for the people of the Mid West region. The opening of the Leben Building means that the UL Hospitals Group now has dedicated and modern facilities for stroke and CF patients. It’s a big step forward for patients, and provides improved working conditions for staff.
“The Leben Building will also free up extra capacity elsewhere as services move into the new building. I want to pay tribute to the HSE, the Midwestern Hospital Development Trust, TLC4CF, and Parkinson’s Ireland, who worked closely together to provide this wonderful new facility. And there’s more to come, as the new ED is due to open in early 2017 and the new maternity facility will also be developed on the Dooradoyle campus.”
Ms Colette Cowan, CEO, UL Hospitals Group, said on Monday: “We are delighted that today, as planned, we have opened our new neurology/stroke unit along with five beds in the new cystic fibrosis unit. We are grateful to the support and commitment from our charity partners TLC4CF, the Parkinson's Association of Ireland and the Mid-Western Hospitals Development Trust for the development of this state of the art facility for patients in the Mid West.
“We would like to acknowledge the support of the Department of Health and Children and the HSE for approval for the associated staffing required, enabling the opening. We ran an extensive recruitment campaign and recognise the support of the IMNO and SIPTU in our combined efforts to enhance services to our patients.”
