Rev henry fulton and the silvermines connection
“That day, May 10th 1798, they rode from grey dawn for two hours across the hills without meeting a living soul. There was silence except for the twittering of birds and buzzing of bees. The mist had gone, and the sun drew a heavy, pungent scent from the acres of gorse coming into bloom. In the fold of the hills, they took off their coats and stretched out on the springy grass to rest and to finish their food.”
These lines, an extract from the novel 'Renegade', depict a scene from the life story of Rev Henry Fulton in Silvermines during the 1798 rebellion.
Fulton was born in Lisburn, Co Antrim in 1761 and educated at Trinity College, Dublin. In the late 1790s he was a clergyman in the diocese of Killaloe. He became involved in the Irish Rebellion of 1798 and was subsequently transported to New South Wales.
Silvermines Historical Society will host a talk on Rev Henry Fulton and the Silvermines connection, presented by the author of 'Renegade', Marjorie Quarton, in The Eagle’s Nest, Dolla, on Monday April 13th at 8pm. All are welcome and there will be a question & answer session after the talk and light refreshments will be served.
