John Colleary headlines the Kenyon Comedy Club this Saturday

Comedian colleary for the kenyon in nenagh

Nenagh's Kenyon Comedy Club makes a welcome return this Saturday night with big name headliner John Colleary.

Sligo man John, who currently stars in RTÉ's hit satirical sketch show 'Pictorial Weekly', started out as a standup comedian in 2003.
The highlight of his career to date has been writing and starring in three-time IFTA nominated series 'The Savage Eye'. He also recently appeared as a panellist on RTÉ comedy quiz show, 'Hey Ho Let's Go', and he has written and performed on radio with his own slot on Today FM's 'The Last Word'.
Looking further back, John's CV reveals a multitude of performances on the comedy circuit around the country, including the big festivals like Kilkenny's Cat Laughs and the Vodafone Comedy Carnival in Galway. His list of overseas gigs includes the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
John was resident MC at Craic in the Box, a monthly comedy club in his native Sligo, where he earned the reputation of a “quick-fire, think on his feet comedian”. He says his most memorable standup moment was doing a Gerry Adams impersonation at a Sinn Féin gig in West Belfast.
Away from the stage, John has been doing a lot of TV work. He has previous credits for appearing on RTÉ hit shows 'The Panel' and 'Stand & Deliver'.
John has performed in Nenagh twice before and he's looking forward to returning this weekend.
“I've been doing a lot of gigs around the country and they've been going well,” he said ahead of his Kenyon show, in which punters can expect lots of spontaneity and audience interaction.
“I do have a pre-planned script but a lot of what I talk about comes down to where we are on the night,” he explained. “I try to do regular routines but I also try to pick up on where I am and relate that to recent events in the news. I try to bring the routine home to the people who are there.”
The Sligo man makes the point that many people attending comedy shows come from outside the town where the show is staged. This he said adds to the material for the comedian to work with and makes for better banter with the crowd.
Regarded as a witty standup who is currently at the top of his game, John Colleary's performance will be the first outing for the Kenyon Comedy Club in around 18 months. He will be joined by local MC John Caplis, who founded the club in 2006, and there will be other guests on the night. Doors 8.30pm, admission €10/7.
