Retired greyhounds head to south of ireland show

Did you know that Greyhounds make perfect pets for most people? They have a quiet temperament, great lead manners, short easy-care coats and soulful eyes they’re quite irresistible.

While greyhounds are common in Ireland, they are usually viewed in the capacity of racing and there are still a lot of people who are not aware of what great pets they make.  The view is that greyhounds needed a huge amount of exercise, but a greyhound race lasts around 30 seconds so as long as they get a good daily walk, they’re happy to settle down and snooze away the rest of the day. Other small house pets are another concern and people are surprised to hear that more than half our greyhounds share their home with a cat, and the cat is often the boss!

The Retired Greyhound Trust began in the mid-nineties and the adoption process is thorough – all dogs receive a full health check, are neutered, vaccinated, micro-chip and temperament assessment before being matched to their new homes.

The Retired Greyhound Trust with the support of GAIN Dog Food have developed a series of Retired Greyhound Shows which offers people a fantastic opportunity for people to meet the dogs and their owners to see what great additions to any household they make. The owners can also offer potential adopters tips and insights into what choosing a greyhound as a pet can mean.

A member of the Irish Retired Greyhound Trust will also be in attendance on the day to put potential adopters in touch with their local Greyhound Rehoming Organisation.

The South of Ireland Retired Greyhound Show will take place at Daverns Equestrian Centre, Fethard Road, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary on Sunday 22nd March commencing at 1.30pm and entry is free.

Welfare Manager for the IGB Barry Coleman said 'Our efforts in rehoming our retired greyhounds are clearly paying off as we continue to work on our awareness campaigns at home and abroad. Initiatives such as Retired Greyhound Shows, through our partnership with the Irish Retired Greyhound Trust and GAIN Pet Food, have in the past proved to be very popular and we aim to further capitalise on this and show that greyhounds make the ultimate house pet for families, single people and the elderly especially in Ireland.'

Welfare Manager for the IGB Barry Coleman said, “The IGB we are always looking for ways to ensure retired greyhounds are looked after in the best way possible and we endeavour to find the right greyhound for every family that is interested in adopting a retired greyhound. The Retired Greyhound Shows are a great way to showcase greyhounds as great pets and great fun!”
