Villa and Celtic claim big wins as Harps slip up

Killavilla United briefly returned to the top of the North Tipperary & District League Premier Division on Friday evening with a 4-1 win over the visiting Portumna Town.

Joe Moloney continued his recent run of goals with an early strike with Denis Moloney and Paul Kirwan adding a goal apiece to give Villa a healthy three goal lead inside the first 35 minutes. Portumna struck back before half time through a Séan O’Meara finish before Kirwan scored his second to seal a comfortable win for the Roscrea side.

However, Villa’s spell at the the top was short-lived as Nenagh Celtic regained pole position with a 5-0 defeat of holders Thurles Town in the Greyhound Stadium on Sunday.

Thurles started well and had a number of opportunities to take the lead but a Séan Healy strike after half an hour settled the away side and from there on they dominated. Shane Aherne got the second for Celtic before half-time and then an unfortunate own goal on the hour mark put them three up. Goals from Szymon Popiela and Danny Ryan completed the rout for the Nenagh side who secured another clean sheet and a return to the top of the table.
