Inexperienced Nenagh suffer heavy opening day loss

Navan 36

Nenagh Ormond 16

The 2018/19 All Ireland League commenced last Saturday with Nenagh Ormond traveling to newly promoted Navan for game one of sixteen and left empty handed with a heavy twenty point defeat.

This is a much changed Nenagh side from the team whom narrowly failed to gain promotion in the two previous seasons in playoff finals. In total, six of the starting team were making their AIL starting debuts and three more from the bench highlighted a lack of experience in numbers at this level.

Nenagh can have no complaints, they were beaten by a better side on the day. Rustiness and lack of game time were obvious observations but there were signs that this team is looking to play a different way and hopefully some fine turning and return of a few players yet will add depth to a very thin squad in the coming weeks.

Player coach Steven Carey withdrew with a groin-strain in the warm up was a start Nenagh did not want and the visitors were rocked when after six minutes the home side were 14-nil up.
