Millennium man Whelahan for Guardian Sports Awards

GAA Hurler of the Millennium Brian Whelahan will be the special guest at the fourth annual Nenagh Guardian Sports Awards, in association with Lyons of Limerick & Nenagh next month.

The Offaly great was the only active player selected on the GAA's Hurling team of the millennium in 2000 at left half back.

Whelahan first came to prominence at minor level with Offaly, winning an All Ireland minor medal in 1998, defeating Tipperary in the final.

A year later he made his senior debut during the 1989 championship. Whelahan went on to play a key role for Offaly during a hugely successful era for the team, winning 2 All Ireland medals in 1994 and 1998, four Leinster medals and one National Hurling Leagu emedals.

At club level he won a record four All-Ireland medals with Birr, while he also claimed seven Leinster medals and twelve county championship medals.

Throughout his career Whelahan made 55 senior championship appearances with Offaly, retiring following the 2006 championship after seventeen seasons.

Whelahan is widely regarded as one of the greatest hurlers in the history of the game. During his playing days he won 4 All-Star awards, as well as being the first person to be named Texaco Hurler of the Year on two occasions.
