Nenagh gym to hold R116 memorial event

CrossFit Nenagh will be hold a special workout in memory of the ill-fated R116 Irish Coast Guard helicopter crew on Saturday, August 18th.

This will be the second year for the Nenagh gym to run the event, proceeds from which will be donated to the RNLI. Last year CrossFit clubs all over the world took part in the memorial and it’s hoped that the same will happen again this month.

The four crew members of R116 tragically lost their lives off the coast of Mayo in March 2017. The tragedy has a personal resonance for CrossFit Nenagh coach Chloë Grace, who knew one of the R116 crew, Dara Fitzpatrick, when she was a child.

All are welcome to visit the CrossFit base in the old aluminium factory at Tyone at 12.00pm to make a donation and get an idea of what CrossFit is all about.

So what is CrossFit? Perhaps misunderstood by many, this new fitness craze has taken Nenagh by storm since it arrived here in 2015. It now caters not only for individual training but also that of local teams such as Nenagh Ormond RFC, Kiladangan GAA Club and Lough Derg FC, as well as Newport College's hurling team.

Part of an international franchise that began in the United States, CrossFit gyms (or 'Boxes') have been cropping up all over Ireland, two of them in Tipperary (in Nenagh and Thurles). CrossFit Nenagh has around 80 members, male and female, ranging in age from teens to 50s, who can train at the Box seven days a week.
