Brian Naughton with his gold medal

Two medals for Tipp athletes at National Championships

North Tipperary were well represented at the Irish Life Health National Track & Field Championships at Morton Stadium, Santry last weekend.

Just two medals came back to North Tipperary in the form of Nenagh Olympic's Brian Naughton who won gold in the inaugural National Junior Mens Weight for Height throw. However Brian was the only competitor but his throw of 3.10 now stands as a national record.

A medal also went back to Templemore in the form of John Dwyer who won bronze in the Weight for Distance (56lbs) event. John also finished fifth in the Men's Hammer and sixth in the Men's Shot Putt.

Other fine performances included Nenagh Olympic's Tom Hennessey who showed the national athletics community that he is a force to be reckoned with when finishing a very fine fourth in a classy 800m final.

Tom hit the front after 300m as he likes to do and made a very honest race of it. In a hectic last 300m, Tom just missed out on a medal when finishing fourth in 1m.53s, with UCD's Mark English winning the title.
