Nenagh claim Pierce Purcell Shield for a fifth time

Nenagh Golf Club won the Pierce Purcell Shield for the second time in three years, and the fifth time in all, at the AIG Cups & Shields finals, hosted by Thurles Golf Club last weekend.

In the final on Friday, Nenagh won out over a valiant Athlone side – winning by four matches to one, following on from a similar 4-1 win over Newbridge GC on Thursday.

All five teams contributed to the win with Denis Corrigan & Martin Fogarty claiming the first half point, finishing all-square in the top match. David Hickey & Martin Reddan earned the first win with a huge impressive 8&6 win in match 4 while shortly afterwards Gerard Clifford & Tom Quinlisk brought Nenagh to the brink of victory with a 3&2 win in match 2.

When James Reddan & Pat J Hogan closed out match 5, 5&3, it confirmed Nenagh's win with Pat Ryan and Mark O'Dwyer claiming a half from their match to complete the 4-1 win to add to their Pierce Purcell Shield successes in 1989, 1991, 1998, 2006 & 2016.
