Conor Carty

7 year old Carty making a name for himself in Golf

A seven-year-old with Kilruane and Nenagh roots is making name as one of the best young golfers in the world.

Conor Carty who lives in New York, son of Stephen and Geraldine (nee Cleere) has enjoyed a busy summer on the fairways and greens of the United States and Ireland.

Conor began swinging a club for the first time just eighteen months ago after watching events on tv with his father noticing he had a good technique. With the help of some coaching from Longford native Davy Byrne in New York, has developed into one of leading golfers for his age, winning fourteen of the seventeen tournaments competed in, progressing to the World Kids Championships which took place at the famous Pinehurst Golf Club in North Carolina, at the beginning of August. However, teeing it up against 115 other competitors, Conor didn't bring his 'A' game but “it was a great experience,” said Stephen.

Back in Ireland for the past couple of weeks on holiday with his brother Sean and sister Sally, Conor took the opportunity to take part in a number of kids competitions, including the Irish Open at the K Club last week where was leading going up the 18th hole, but an unfortunate triple bogey saw him finish in third place.

We aim to keep him going because he loves it,” added Stephen Carty, who is a native of Kilruane, and who manages Mickey Spillane's pub in Eastchester, New York. Conor and his older brother Sean Carty both play hurling in New York with Sean aiming to make the New York team to take part in Feile na nGael in 2019.
