Scoring 1-7 from play it was Cian Hogan’s day as the powerful half forwards second half display helped Lorrha into to the semi-finals of the Seamus O’Riain for the first time in seven years when they defeated Templederry in a thrill a minute quarter final last Sunday afternoon.

Hogan’s display was one of his finest in a Lorrha jersey. His goal in the 42nd minute really made the difference. The three-pointer put Lorrha six clear and it was the breathing space the Lorrha lads required after a slow first half as Templederry looked set to repeat the win of last year.

Indeed, such was the grip that Templederry had on the game makes one wonder how they let it slip. Having led by five points close to half time they took their foot of the gas and squander-mania set in as they struck six wides in the build-up to half time. In additional time the lead had slipped to one at half time before being outscored 2-4 to 0-3 in the opening twelve minutes of a spellbinding second half.

It was a marked contrast to the opening minutes where Templederry were able to run through the Lorrha backline with ease and were 1-4 to 0-1 in front after Sean Ryan exploited poor marking with a goal from close range after five minutes.

Adrian Ryan increased the lead after Cian Hogan reduced it to four the Lorrha defence received a major fright when Sean Ryan’s second effort for a goal whizzed past Patrick Reddin’s goal. Templederry were the better side and in the 14th minute they doubled their lead after Odhran Murphy, and Adrian Ryan made it 1-7 to 0-6.

Brian Stapleton’s was the busiest of the Templederry backline while Liam McCutcheon and Christy Coughlan lent a helping hand but in the 15th minute a lapse in concentration allowed Christopher Fogarty to bring the best from Templederry goalkeeper John Kennedy. Templederry failed to clear and Fogarty followed up with a point.

When the first water break arrived in the 16th minute Templederry led 1-8 to 0-8 and throughout the next five minutes the lead ebbed and flowed from two to three but brilliant scores by Tom & Sean Ryan increased the Kenyon lead to four after 21 minutes.

Templederry’s quick hurling kept them to the fore and by the 27th minute they were five in front after Tom Ryan brought his total to four in the first half. They had more chances, but the lead remained the same as the Kenyons begin to squander and Lorrha took advantage. Brian Hogan, who along with Michael Dolan and Ciaran Haugh were Lorrha’s best defenders, sent a ninety-metre free all the way over the bar.

Then a move led by Eoin McIntyre suddenly had the fingerprints of Patrick Maher and Colm Fogarty involved before McIntyre had the ball in the Templederry net seconds before changeover.

As the second half commenced Templederry went three in front thanks to Adrian Ryan and an Eanna Murray free. Suddenly it was all about to change as Lorrha left Templederry in the dark over the next six minutes. Colm Fogarty was as ever one of the leaders and after his pointed free in the 37th minute, he was on hand to tap home a goal from close range after goalkeeper Kennedy failed to deal with a speculative Cian Hogan delivery.

Suddenly Lorrha’s play was in a new planet as the lead increased with points by Cian Hogan, Ciaran Haugh and Hogan again. Christy Coughlan reduced the margin from halfway but Lorrha had the Templederry backline in fear at this stage and the momentum continued as an unmarked Cian Hogan scored a goal from close range after Colm Fogarty’s one-handed ground flick proved vital.

Two goals separated the teams but not for long as a 47th minute goal by the excellent Adrian Ryan brought Templederry back into the frame. Eanna Murray’s free from halfway followed but Cian Hogan scored from the same spot just in time for the final water break, 3-17 to 2-17.

On returning to the action Templederry reduced margin to one as Eanna Murray converted two frees. However, Brian Hogan was immense at half back and his eighty metre free eased Lorrha’s worries and in the 58th minute their troubles had almost disappeared when substitute Alan O’Meara tapped home a goal from close range after Colm Fogarty again provided the final pass. Indeed, the eighteen-year-old Fogarty had a hand in all of Lorrha’s goals.

Cian Hogan then won two puckouts in the air when his side needed them before Eanna Murray replied with a free, but Patrick Maher’s delivery sent Daniel O’Donoghue through for another Lorrha score in the 60th minute.

It was a thrill a minute now as Sean Ryan forced Patrick Reddin to save but play was called back for Eanna Murray to score his eight free. However, when Cian Hogan scored his seventh point, one sensed it was Lorrha’s day. Substitute Padraig O’Leary managed a reply in the third minute of added time, but another Colm Fogarty score put the icing on the cake for Lorrha as they march onto a semi-final against Killenaule.
